World Spine Day: Spine Health for Life

This Friday, 16th October, marks World Spine Day, a global awareness day coordinated by the World Federation of Chiropractic to highlight the importance of spinal health, prevention and access to good spine care. This year’s theme is “Spine Health for Life.”

The scale of the issue is significant. Global Burden of Disease research, published in The Lancet, estimated that 619 million people worldwide were living with low back pain in 2020, making it the single leading cause of disability across every world region studied.

Much of this burden isn’t caused by a single dramatic injury, but builds gradually through posture, movement habits and how much – or how little – the spine moves through its full range day to day.

The “Spine Health for Life” theme reflects this: spinal health isn’t a one-off fix, but something built through habits sustained over years.

In practice, this is exactly where our work sits – helping people understand how their spine moves, spotting patterns that might be limiting comfortable movement, and supporting people to build habits that keep the spine healthy for the long term, rather than just addressing pain when it flares up.

• Keep moving throughout the day rather than sitting for long unbroken periods

• Pay attention to posture during everyday tasks, not just at a desk

• Build general strength and flexibility, not just targeted exercises

• Don’t ignore small, recurring niggles – they’re often easier to address early

World Spine Day is a helpful reminder that a healthy spine isn’t about a single appointment or a single stretch – it’s about the everyday habits built up over a lifetime.

This week is as good a time as any to start paying a little more attention to yours.
