Desk Work & Mobility - Simple Ways to Keep Moving Well

If you spend much of your day at a desk, you’re in good company.

The Office for National Statistics reports that millions of UK adults work in largely sedentary roles. The NHS recommends breaking up prolonged sitting with regular movement to support joint and muscle health.

The real issue with desk work isn’t just sitting – it’s staying in one position for too long.

Over time, this can contribute to:
• Low back pain
• Reduced upper back mobility
• Neck and shoulder discomfort

That’s where gentle mobility work can really help.

In our Full Body Stretching guide, we outline simple exercises you can do at home or in the office, including:

✔ Neck mobility exercises
✔ Chest-opening stretches
✔ Upper back rotations
✔ Seated hamstring stretches
✔ Standing hip flexor stretches

These movements are designed to reintroduce variety into your day – encouraging joints and muscles to move through comfortable ranges again.

A helpful rule of thumb is to stand, walk or stretch every 30-60 minutes. It doesn’t need to be lengthy or intense. Small, consistent breaks are far more effective than one long stretch at the end of the day.

We also provide patients with personalised video demonstrations of these stretches, along with additional exercises tailored to individual needs. Your desk set-up, activity levels and previous injuries all influence what will suit you best – which is why individual guidance matters.

Chiropractic care supports this by improving joint mobility and guiding progressive strengthening, helping you feel more comfortable both at your desk and away from it.

If you’d like specific advice for recurring aches or posture concerns, book an appointment and let’s build a plan that works for you.
